Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (Microsoft .NET Development Series)

Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (Microsoft .NET Development Series)

by Sam Guckenheimer (Author), Juan J. Perez (Author)

Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System is written for a software team that is considering running a software project using Visual Studio Team System (VSTS). It is about the "why" of VSTS: its guiding ideas, why they are presented in certain ways, and how they fit into the process of managing the software lifecycle. This book is the next best thing to having an onsite coach who can lead the team through a consistent set of processes. It is a framework for thinking about software projects in a way that can be directly tooled by VSTS. It presents essential theory and practical examples to describe a realistic process for IT projects. This is a book that any team using or considering VSTS should read.

Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System is written for any software team that is considering running a software project using Visual Studio Team System (VSTS), or evaluating modern software development practices for its use.

It is about the value-up paradigm of software development, which forms the basis of VSTS: its guiding ideas, why they are presented in certain ways, and how they fit into the process of managing the software lifecycle. This book is the next best thing to having an onsite coach who can lead the team through a consistent set of processes.

Sam Guckenheimer has been the chief customer advocate for VSTS, responsible for its end-to-end external design. He has written this book as a framework for thinking about software projects in a way that can be directly tooled by VSTS. It presents essential theory and practical examples to describe a realistic process for IT projects.

Readers will learn what they need to know to get started with VSTS, including

  • The role of the value-up paradigm (versus work-down) in the software development lifecycle, and the meanings and importance of “flow”
  • The use of MSF for Agile Software Development and MSF for CMMI Process Improvement
  • Work items for planning and managing backlog in VSTS
  • Multidimensional, daily metrics to maintain project flow and enable estimation
  • Creating requirements using personas and scenarios
  • Project management with iterations, trustworthy transparency, and friction-free metrics
  • Architectural design using a value-up view, service-oriented architecture, constraints, and qualities of service
  • Development with unit tests, code coverage, profiling, and build automation
  • Testing for customer value with scenarios, qualities of service, configurations, data, exploration, and metrics
  • Effective bug reporting and bug assessment
  • Troubleshooting a project: recognizing and correcting common pitfalls and antipatterns

This is a book that any team using or considering VSTS should read.

Before joining Microsoft, Daniel served as the Chief Architect and CEO for Odyssey Consulting Group, which provided custom application development for mid-range companies. In the Microsoft fold, Daniel has been a Regional Director, an MVP (ASP / ASP.NET), a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, and a .NET insider for the Southern California region. He’s also the founder of the SoCalDotNet Developers Group, teaches a .NET certification course at California State University Fullerton, and previously served as president of INETA – the international .NET association. Away from the screen, you’ll find Daniel racing to bring down his marathon times (don’t ask for numbers) or putting his Canon camera through the paces in search of the perfect shot.

CCS Architecture: A Prescriptive Take On Line-Of-Business Web Application Structure

Jeffery Palermo, CTO, Headspring

Most architecture guidance is very high-level and abstract.  It attempts to accommodate all contexts.  CCS Architecture is a prescriptive architecture geared for medium-sized (50-100 screens) web Line-of-Business applications using relational databases and off-line processing jobs.  While providing patterns and concrete examples for implementing common records-management functionality, CCS Architecture provides proven patterns for, Build automation, Database migration, Automated testing, Deployment automation, Leveraging Onion Architecture, Commoditized data access, Workflow patterns, Object-oriented UI.

Webinar Series: Urban and Information Architectures: A Cross Disciplinary Approach to Complexity

Roger Sessions and Nikos Salingaros

How do you manage the complexity of large systems? Complexity management is a common problem for both large urban architectures and large information architectures. Architectural complexity in both disciplines is driven by similar mathematical principles which define the relationship between complex systems (which are difficult to manage and understand) and simpler systems (which are easily graspable.) IT architects can learn to design much better and simpler IT systems by studying the basic design principles of urban architecture.

In this Webinar, Roger Sessions (IT Complexity Expert) and Nikos Salingaros (Urban Complexity Expert) explore the common problem of complexity as it impacts both IT and urban architectures and discuss the critical lessons each discipline can learn from the other.

The Angry Architect

Review: I/T Architecture in Action
By: Tom Hope

This book is about IT Architecture and is a methodology based on a technical five domain framework; Applications, Information, Network, Platform and Operations. It addresses each providing pretty much the currently accepted practices for each domain.

This means that over time the book will probably not age that well, but it is a fairly sound summary of the current state of play. It includes areas and concepts like wireless, ESBs, ODS and even SOA and virtualization, in a concise but not very detailed way.  After all it is only 180 pages and there would be books with more  pages on every one of these topics.

The  philosophy of blending  "strict rigor and organic innovation" sets this book a little at odds with the Euro architects, but it does produce an easy reading and informative text.  The book opens with the all too common Why EA? sell chapter;  in which the author covers off the usual agility verses cohesion issues.  However, I think it is in the next two chapters on Architectural Principles and Governance in which the book makes its real contribution.

Principles seem to be a problem for a lot of architects. Particularly, connecting them in a meaningful way to the design and development domains. This book offers what may be the best twenty odd pages linking business models and strategy to principles that I've seen written for the layman.  He goes on to back this up with a simple, but better than average chapter on governance. In which he rather timidly pokes a stick at the "managerial behavior" elephant. I can almost feel him constraining his frustration to the suggestion of a few metrics for the architectural review board's performance. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much to say about handling architectural exceptions, but then again not many authors do.

This is a good book, current, and easily read,  a little lightweight and while some sections will with time become obsolete others contain sound advice obviously born of experience.  Not deeply technical or academic it is a more than a fair attempt to bridge the business IT divide. I think most architects would find something useful in this book.
